Let’s Go to the Movies!

The 2018 San Francisco Jewish Film Festival is up and running. You can read their entire offering here. This year Building Jewish Bridges is co-presenting two interesting films.

The first is The Entertainer with Toby Jones. Here’s the description I got.

Back in the 90s, Paul Limp (Toby Jones) used to be a successful television game show host. Now he spends his life driving up and down the M1 in a cheap polyester tuxedo, entertaining at private events: weddings, office parties, the lot. But tonight it’s thirteen year old Charlotte’s Bat Mitzvah and it’s set to be the best night of her life. Until MC Paul starts drinking and steals the show.

Bat mitzvah gone bad!

The Entertainer will play:

Tuesday July 24, 2018
12:00 p.m.
Castro Theatre

Saturday August 4, 2018
12:00 p.m.
Piedmont Theatre

Death Metal Grandma

The second film is Death Metal Grandma. Did I get you with the title? I was a bit hesitant even after reading the description, Death Metal Grandma follows 95 year old Holocaust survivor Inge Ginsberg as she attempts to break out as a death metal singer by submitting to America’s Got Talent.  Then I watched the little clip that the Festival has on their website and I was SOLD. Inge Ginsberg says, “In American and even European culture, the old people are excluded from life.”  So this isn’t just some cute old lady getting on TV, this is an intelligent woman seeing the way of the world and fighting for her place in it – despite her age.  Bring it on, Inge!

Death Metal Grandma will play:

Wednesday July 25, 2018
1:00 p.m.
Castro Theatre

Monday July 30, 2018
12:45 p.m.
Albany Twin

I’m thinking about doing a group film outing.  Are you interested? Email me.
